Disc golf courses are, unfortunately, not all created equal. And while there's no reason you shouldn't give any and all of them a try, I wanted to share my thoughts on some of the courses I've been to!
For my first course review, I'm going to be talking about the Rock Ridge Park disc golf course in Moncure, NC.
The disc golf course at Rock Ridge Park is really a fantastic course. While it may be a bit of a trek for anyone closer to Raleigh than Jordan Lake, I think that it's well worth the drive. It includes a playground, mini-amphitheater, 1/2 mile asphalt walking trail, and, of course, a disc golf course. Rock Ridge Park can be found at 1397 Old Sanford Rd, Moncure NC 27559, and more info can be found at the Pittsboro Parks website.
Rock Ridge Park sports a full 18 hole, par 65 course that meanders through the woods surrounding the park. It's a very light hike while you play and takes a very nice route. The holes are well thought out: there are distinct fairways and the trees generally are kept out of the way, but the course is still moderately challenging. Some tees are on hilly areas where you need to watch out for how your disc lands, some holes make you decide which pathway to the basket you want to take, and others require pure distance throws. That being said, this course feels well balanced and you have plenty of chances for birdies, eagles, or even aces.
Unlike other courses, this one sports only two tees per hole: a red and blue set. The red are what most recreational players will likely want to throw from. They're not too easy, but they're the most approachable, and I feel like they're similar to the white tees at other courses. The blue tees are more of a challenge and, in some cases, really ramp up the distance you need to throw.
I visited it for the first time a few weeks ago. The facilities were nice, I thoroughly enjoyed the course, and I really want to go back. Definitely give it a shot if you're looking for an adventure and something new.
I give this course a 9/10 👍
